The Indian Health Service, an agency within the Department of Health and Human Services, is responsible for providing federal health services to American Indians and Alaska Natives.

Medicaidย provides health coverage to low-income people and is one of the largest payers for health care in the United States.

Education

Bureau of Indian Education (BIE)

Website

The Bureau of Indian Education supports educational opportunities for more than 400,000 American Indian and Alaska Native students across the United States through a comprehensive system of direct services and funding programs spanning early childhood to postsecondary education. As stated in Title 25 CFR Part 32.3, BIEโ€™s mission is to provide quality education opportunities from early childhood through life in accordance with a tribeโ€™s needs for cultural and economic well-being, in keeping with the wide diversity of Indian tribes and Alaska Native villages as distinct cultural and governmental entities. Further, the BIE is to manifest consideration of the whole person by taking into account the spiritual, mental, physical, and cultural aspects of the individual within his or her family and tribal or village context.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has information on food programs and assistance for Native American communities such as the Food DIstribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDIPR), Child Nutrition Programs (CNP), Food Sovereignty, Supplemetnal Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and more. โ€‹

    Housing

    Housing and Urban Development (HUD)

    The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has Native American programs that are designed to support affordable housing and community development activities for Native Americans, Alaska Natives, and Native Hawaiians such as Indian Housing Block Grant (IHBG) Program, Loan Guarantees, and more.ย

    The purpose of the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) is “…to protect the best interest of Indian Children and to promote the stability and security of Indian tribes and families by the establishment of minimum Federal standards for the removal of Indian children and placement of such children in homes which will reflect the unique values of Indian culture… “(25 U.S. C. 1902). ICWA provides guidance to States regarding the handling of child abuse and neglect and adoption cases involving Native children and sets minimum standards for the handling of these cases.

    The Department of the Interior believes everyone deserves to feel safe in their communities.ย The Missing and Murdered Unit within the Office of Justice Services focuses on analyzing and solving missing and murdered cases involving American Indians and Alaska Natives.

    The Department of Justice is committed to addressing the persistent violence endured by Native American families and communities across the country, including by working with Tribal nations to address the important issues of missing or murdered indigenous persons. The Department views this work as a priority for its law enforcement components. It also recognizes the broader public safety and public health concerns that underlie many of these cases and require solutions from across the Department’s components.

    The FBI works in collaboration with Tribal police and other law enforcement agencies to investigate and enforce laws related to major crimes, such as homicides, kidnappings and drug trafficking, that occur within its jurisdiction on Tribal lands. The FBI and Tribal, Department of Justice, and Department of Interior partners are committed to addressing MMIP.
